Statement

Modern people only live in the modern. The pursuit of individualism became prominent in the 19th century, which is only a small chapter compared to the history of humanity, but modern people have come to see individualism and free will as inherent aspects of human nature. The individual development of thoughts is limited by the commonsense morality and social norm standards in the society they live in. When people pursue individuality without the ability to think independently, this pursuit becomes only a rebellion against the group. Being different from others and achieving uniqueness has become the best way for modern people to realize freedom.

The fragility of the human body makes it hard for individuals to meet basic survival needs, so we gradually form groups and societies, supporting each other to survive better. However, with the advancement of technology in the modern era, people can rely on technology to achieve independent living, diminishing the significance of group consciousness and goals. The unbridled development of individualism leads to the disintegration of society. We may no longer see the need for group mentality because each individual is suggested to develop their unique values and attach a label of individuality.

This garment expresses the absurd reality that I experience, which absurdity has gradually become the norm of our lives. The proliferation and superficiality of theories, and the convenience and thoughtlessness of modern technology, are shaping modern people into a radical and irresponsible generation. Elements of popular Chinese internet language and the commonality in shapes of body parts demonstrate the absurdity found in our daily lives. The head mask represents the anonymity of the internet. The full coverage of the head, hands, and feet continues the concept of losing all senses. During the shoot, these components took away all the shame I could have felt regarding exposing my buttocks in front of the camera.

This work continues the cycle of restriction, freedom, and desire by representing the vertex of freedom.
